Harold
December 3, 2011 at 11:49 pm | Posted in Michael Says | 7 CommentsI’m not really sure how to start this post…….
Harold died this morning around 10:30 AM. Earlier this morning, they had taken him down to get a dialysis treatment and then he was brought back to his room, he seemed to be ok and went to sleep.
Later (around 10:30) the nurse went to give him his morning bath and she discovered that he had passed away.
I sat around at the hospital all day until I could talk to a doctor that had worked on Harold’s case and he said it could have been a many number of things that caused his death.
I wont know the exact time or cause of death until I get the death certificate.
I was going to write more, but, I’m really not up for it right now….I have lost my mentor, best friend and trusted business partner, but I do want to thank everyone for their support.
With that said, you’ll have to excuse the brevity of this post.
PS: The store will be closed Sunday.
Michael

Oh, Michael. I’m so sorry. As you know, I was very fond of Hal and always looked forward to visiting and e-mailing with him. I’ll be in touch to see if there is anything I can do.

Michael; What a shock! Harold & I go way back to our crazy times in New Orleans where we were roomates & best buds for the entire 20 years I lived in the south. My heart goes out to you & all the poeple there in Panama who got to know him.He was definitely one of a kind & will be greatly missed. I would ALSO appreciate any further updates on how it all came to pass & will you now continue posting news from the Bookmark? So many questions I know but do know that we share in your grief & loss & hope that you are able to continue doing Harolds fine work. God Be With You All. xoxo

We had the pleasure to drive Hal to Panama City a few weeks ago. Hours of driving under constant pain could not diminish his vivid aliveness in the slightest. He would have called him the curmudgeon but underlying was this silent knowing radiantly alive in each and every moment. He would not tell the stories of his extensive past but rather just indulge in whatever was popping up along the way. He had his fun ordering a soft drink and asking for ice cream and mixing his sugary Boston cooler. He was complaining not so much about his pain but rather about the shrinking seize of his beloved Musketeer candy bar that he considered was now developing into some sort of nihilism.
Hal, we carry you inside of us, for as long as it is meant to be.

My coming, my going -
Two simple happenings
That got entangled.

I am in shock. I met Harold in 1944 when we were both in 8th grade. I was the new kid in school and he made me welcome. or friendship continued through high school and in our senior year he introduced me to my future and still husband, we lost track after that. In 2003, returning from a vacation I found an eMail from him and we have corresponded since. It was so much fun. We filled each other in on our lost years and reminisced about the old days in Toledo. My days will have huge holes in them now without his pithy notes.
I will contact classmates in Toledo with the sad news. We had hoped to reunite at a reunion in ’13 and were looking forward to it.
I am only glad the pain is over for him. I will miss him to the end of my days.

Dear Michael,
We never had the pleasure of meeting you, or Hal, or Emilcar, in person, but through Hal’s gifted ability to write and blog, we felt we were able to get to know a kind, generous and thoughtful man, who loved his “curmudgeonly” persona, as he worried about those around him, and his critters, Codeine and Gimp. He had such a talent of getting the message out on today’s issues and the World will miss his quick wit and observations. We will miss him so very much and pray you have peace and comfort, as you think of your best friend and mentor, you know he’ll be with you, watching you and guiding you through the days ahead, he’s just on the other side of the curtain, and he’s smiling.
With our Love,
Clyde and Linda

Michael,
In the ebb and flow,
in the vicissitudes,
in the storms and in the doldrums,
in the risings and settings,
always, evermore, is the light.
Stay steadfast, good man.
